Russia - Registration for foreigners simplified |
There is good news for people who often travel to Russia: since January 1, 2011 the state duty for migration registration for foreign citizens is cancelled. Nevertheless, the foreigners who come to Russia for more than 3 working days still need to register. If you, for example, come to Russia for the period from January 1 to January 10, during official holidays, you do not need to register: it concerns only the period that exceeds 3 working days.
According to the items of the Russian Tax Code the amount of registration fee was 2 rubles per day (it’s about 6-7 cents), but not more than 200 rubles in total. And if you wanted to extend your registration it cost 2 rubles per day, but not more than 600 rubles.
As tourists say, the fact of registration was checked very rarely on the way back. But if you had not been registered during your trip, next time when you want to obtain a Russian visa, your request might be rejected by the reason “previous violation of the visa regime”
In recent years Federal Migration Service has significantly simplified the procedure of registration. Now the hotel staff can do it through the internet, a person can do it through the post.
