Our English speaking guide will show you and the lady of your choice some of the major Kharkov sights. You’ll enjoy the views of one of the biggest and most interesting Ukrainian cultural, scientific, industrial and historical centers.
We start our tour from the Liberty Square - the largest square in Europe and second largest in the world. You’ll see Kharkov State University, Military Academy, Gosprom Building (a unique building, the first Soviet high-rise building made from solid ferro-concrete, served as a building of the government of Ukraine in 1928-1934 when Kharkov was the capital of Ukraine (1918-1934)).
We'll walk through Shevchenko park with its beautiful ancient oak-trees, nice flowers and wonderful fountain colorfully illuminated at night. We can also go to the Kharkov Zoo which celebrated its 100th anniversary a few years ago. If you feel tired and want some rest, we can have a cup of coffee and enjoy Ukrainian ice-cream at one of the many cafes in the park. Then you’ll have a look at the famous Monument to the great Ukrainian poet Shevchenko (The tall tower is crowned by the bronze sculpture of the poet, depicted in grief and wrath. Sixteen figures symbolizing the struggle of Ukrainian people are mounted on the helical projections entwining the pedestal of the Monument).
Then we’ll pass the Kharkov Opera and Ballet House, Mirror Stream and go along Sumskaya street - the main street of the city with many old and architecturally valuable buildings.
We’ll cross the Constitution Square and come into the yard of the Pokrovsky Monestary (1689) - the oldest building in the city, dating back to the foundation of the Kharkov fortress. A brilliant reflection of the Ukrainian Baroque era of the 17th century. The bell rower resembles a defense tower. The cathedral was part of the fortification system of the Kharkov fortress.
Then we’ll take a look at the outdoors exposition of heavy arms (tanks, canons) of WW I and WW II and walk to the University Hill (named after the Kharkov Univerity founded in 1805, one of the first Universities of the Russian Empire) - the place near confluence of Kharkov and Lopan rivers where in 1654 Kharkov Fortress was built, Uspensky Cathedral, Blagoveschensky Cathedral - the biggest church in Kharkov.
Then you can taste traditional Ukrainian food at one of the best restaurants of Kharkov. You’ll have a 3-step test for becoming a true Ukrainian guy:
- Ukrainian borsch with pampushkas;
- Lard and garlic;
- Ukrainian gorilka (vodka).
